It used to be a simpler world. Search engines had 10 blue links based off relevance between the keyword and the search query. But then spammers came along, stuffing pages with invisible keywords to increase keyword density. Search engines had to advance their ranking algorithms to include more signals, and yet spammers still found ways to game the system to boost rankings. As the web and AI technologies have evolved, so too have the spam techniques and methods to detect them.

In this Course, we walk through the history of search algorithms. We then discuss how Bing has adapted its algorithm to use modern machine learning to change the face of the search results, improve relevance and counter new spamming threats.

Christi Olson

Christi Olson is the Head of Search, within the Global Media team at Microsoft leading all paid search efforts for the company. She has over a decade of experience in digital marketing leading both in-house and agency teams across the retail, travel, automotive and consumer electronics industries. Olson serves on the Advisory Boards for the Paid Search Association, the Internet Marketing Association, and the University of Idaho School of Business.
